Red winged blackbird babies

Collection of several Red winged blackbirds and their nests and young.   This past week quite a few birds timed it to have their young out.

Various

Already saw my first Downy Woodpecker chicks and Red-winged blackbird fledgling.  Robins have been out of the nest for a bit, too, though some (as in this pic) are still in the process.  Barn Swallows seem to just be getting going - couple of pics of one getting mud from near a boardwalk.  Tree Swallows can be kinda crappy for kicking bluebirds out of their boxes, but they sure are pretty!

Lowry Banding pics

Working my way backwards to last month at Lowry!  We had a male ruby-crowned kinglet, and the white-crowned sparrows were coming through.  I took a few shots of the female red-winged blackbirds - love that rusty color on their wrists.

Great Horned Owlets

Was out of town for a bit, so I slacked a little on the blog.  Here are a few photos (and more coming) from a clutch of baby great horned owlets.  They are about 5-6 weeks old here.   There are three, with one that is a bit smaller/younger than the other two.   They nested in the hollow of this tree, just off a trail in an urban park.

Money Merlin Shots

Pretty fantastic male merlin shots, if I do say so myself.  This adult male was enjoying some lunch in a tree this past week.  I saw him fly at a squirrel earlier in the week in this tree, glancing a blow off its shoulder.

Swamp Sparrows

Swamp Sparrows are a treat that travel through the Metro area.  There is a bit of variation in individuals; the first three photos are of one bird, who has more rufous on the crown, and a more buffy cheek patch.  The last three are of one bird, with the rufous crown more "worn" and more black showing.

Hawk and Heron cams

Red-tailed hawks and great blue herons are hatching!  Couple of cameras to follow the "inner lives" of these birds.
